During the 2010-2011 school year, YWLP hosted two events that exemplified our core values of competence, connection, and autonomy.

“You better work!”–An Evening with April Wilkner (3/14/2011)

In association with Women of Color, Sociology and Anthropology Club, Framar and Woman’s History Month, we welcomed model April Wilkner to the UMW campus. April, who appeared on America’s Next Top Model, talked about her experiences as a model and how working in the beauty and fashion industry has impacted her. She engaged in discussion with UMW students and encouraged the audience to consider how advertising affects our lives and body images.

We were honored to win the UMW Leadership Award for Outstanding Diversity Program for the event with April.

Final Finale (4/16/2011)

Our annual end-of-year event took place inside for a change, but we didn’t let thunderstorm warnings stop us. The mentors and middle school students from all three schools came together at UMW to celebrate the end of the year and show off to the students’ parents what they had learned

Playing Cross the Line

Not only did we put a fun twist on YWLP traditions such as Cross the Line, we had competitions to see which group could name the most YWLP terms. Afterward, each group presented a skit they had prepared the week earlier. Some skits showcased YWLP lessons such as the ABCs of Problem Solving or how to use I Statements. Other groups talked about what they loved the most about YWLP. One group composed their own YWLP rap. We gave the students t-shirts and certificates to show our appreciation of their commitment and ended the afternoon with a huge lunch. It was the perfect send-off to a great year!
